Joseph Wright was a genre and portrait painter, born in on Iron Gate, Derby in 1734. He remained in Derby for most of his life, and is best known for his industrial scenes such as 'The Air Pump' (1768, National Gallery, London), and his treatment of artificial light. Wright died in 1797.

This is a fragment of the temporary exhibition of the papier-mache figures inspired by paintings by Wright of Derby at Derby Museum and Art Gallery in 2000.
