Further Information:

Joseph Wright was the third son of John Wright, attorney and town Clerk, and his wife Hannah Brooks. He was educated at Derby Free School in St Peterís Churchyard. During his teenage years he decided it was his vocation to become an artist, despite his fatherís disapproval. Today Wright is held in the highest regard both locally and internationally. There is an art gallery devoted to him in Derby Museum and Art Gallery; his paintings hang in the National Gallery, London, and in the Louvre, Paris. In 1997 an exhibition was put together with 260 of his paintings and drawings, celebrating the 200th anniversary of his death. The marble memorial pillar opposite Wrightís birthplace depicts an Orrery, which is featured in one of his most famous works. The building in which he was born has been demolished.                                                                                                        <br />
