Using Hi-Resolution Digital Images for Public Reproduction and Commercial Use

Thank you for your interest in obtaining digital copies of our images. We can supply most of our images as high-resolution TIFF's or JPEGS (up to 300dpi and sized at around A4). The file size is around 25MB as an RGB TIFF but this can be scaled down according to your needs.

Depending on how, and where, you intend to use them there may be fees to pay. These can be confirmed by contacting us using the details below.

Non-commercial use is where the images are to be used for the benefit of the local community or by non-profit making organisations. Examples include parish magazines, newsletters, blogs and social media etc.

Semi-commercial use is where the images will be used as decoration or for public display in a commercial environment. Examples include pub wall decoration, interpretation boards, leaflets etc.

Full Commercial use is what we use to describe reproduction of images in commercial print or perhaps in a transmission or projection. Examples include use on TV, in advertising, commercial books etc.

Around 80% of our images are already rights-cleared for full commercial use and these are identified on the website by a green button with a tick alongside them -

Some images display a blue button with a question mark - These are usually where the copyright owner wishes to be contacted before allowing use.

There are a few images that display a cross in a red button and these are used to denote images that need their provenance checking before being supplied.

You can pre-select images that you're interested in using by clicking any one of these buttons where they appear under the thumbnail images. This will automatically place it in a shortlist and allow you to select more images. Once you've compiled your list you can add your contact details and click 'send' to email it through to us. We'll check the list of images and confirm the cost by return email for your approval.

Timescales - We aim to respond to commercial order requests either the same day or the next working day but it does help if you include an idea of the deadline you're working to and give us as much advance warning as possible. Once payment is taken the images will be dispatched as soon as possible, usually the same day.

Note: Images marked with or will need to have their provenance checked before we can supply them as they may be subject to copyright or need the permission of the owners before being used. This may lengthen the time it takes us to process your enquiry so, if you need images in a hurry, please try to select only those with a .

Delivery - hi-res images will normally be sent via a transfer website called WeTransfer which enables us to upload the images and for you to download them at your convenience. This saves the problem of filling up inboxes and problems with network firewalls etc.

If you wish to make an enquiry or get an idea of prices without selecting images first you can submit an e-mail directly to info@picturethepast.org.uk or by contacting us using the details below:
